Ukrainian-Canadian Family Launches Kickstarter for Children’s Picture Book on Migration and Family Traditions

Nanaimo, British Columbia Jun 12, 2025 (Issuewire.com) - The Tale of Strong Roots is a gentle, heartfelt childrens picture book inspired by one familys real journey from Ukraine to Canada. Written by Ukrainian grandmother Valentyna Miliohlova, the book draws on family traditions and stories that helped her granddaughters feel safe and connected while starting over far from home.

The project was created after Valentyna and her family were forced to flee Ukraine due to war. Now living on Vancouver Island, British Columbia, her daughter and granddaughters are working together to bring this meaningful story to life through their first-ever Kickstarter campaign.

The story follows Mariyka, a young girl navigating life in a new country. While everything around her feels unfamiliar, her grandmother shares stories passed down through generations helping her find strength, belonging, and invisible roots that stay with her, no matter where life takes her.

When you leave your home behind, you realize that home lives inside you in stories, in traditions, and in the love of your family. Thats what I wanted to give my granddaughters, and every child starting over.
